The rapid growth of Southeast Asia market has always been attractive to investors while local exhibitions create collaboration and partnership opportunities for foreign manufacturers taping into the market. This year, Energy efficient technologies were added to the LED Expo Thailand 2016 that took place from April 19-22, 2016 at IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand, including solar power, energy efficient products. Meanwhile, LED and lighting related exhibitions found exhibitors from southeast Asia, including Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan.
Based on LEDinside’s interviews with exhibitors at the LED Expo Thailand 2016, aside from local Thai manufacturers, many buyers are from adjacent ASEAN countries. These buyers mainly focus on general luminaires while increasing demand of downlights and other high power luminaires emerged. In other words, high power luminaires are product sector with great potential among luminaires.

International manufacturers include Philips also echo with Energy Service Companies (ESCO)’s vision of promoting energy management and smart city. Philips introduced related case studies and demonstration at the exhibition this year. It’s found that Thai government became more supportive as energy expenditure increased every year, urging the Energy Ministry to establish policies to address energy management and related facilities. This includes providing full support in LED lighting and other energy-saving technologies, said Anantaporn Kanjanara, Energy Minister General. Thai government decided to slash 30% of energy consumption by 2036, a goal which it has 20 years to achieve. The government is to roll out short-term and long-term public energy saving policies.

Transportation, industrial manufacture, commercial and residential applications are main contributors of the country’s energy consumption, said Anantaporn Kanjanara. The government will facilitate the use and purchase of energy-efficient electronic devices by rolling out energy efficiency act and existing energy saving program.
Nonetheless, Thai government will promote energy management approaches include ESCO while collaborating with municipal departments, financial organizations, and manufacturers to accelerate the penetration of LED lighting in the industry.
LEDinside found that the policy of Thai government is very similar to that of Indian government. Although Thailand won’t have huge demand of LED bulbs, LED tube bids like India, the overall demand of LED lighting can have huge potential in terms of an emerging market.
Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) manages electricity supply of the whole country and it also plays a part in LED Expo Thailand 2016. This time it runs a campaign that allow consumers to exchange new LED bulbs with conventional bulbs. More policies will be introduced to encourage consumers in purchasing LED bulbs. It’s expected that the shipment volume of LED bulbs in Thai lighting market will further increase.
Local manufacturers also introduce lighting for intelligent shops.

Philips is actively deploying its channels and projects in Thailand. Aside from control and lighting system proposed for energy-saving city, the leading manufacturer promotes its LED tube lights and LED bulbs for commercial and residential applications. One good example is the LED filament bulbs that are gaining increasing popularity over the past few years have received a great amount of inquiries at the exhibition.

Toyoda-Gosei launched the first glass-encapsulated ultraviolet LED back in March and it also display the product for the first time in LED Expo Thailand 2016. The product has since received positive feedback from clients while drawing the attention of many other LED manufacturers. The expected lifetime of glass-encapsulated ultraviolet LED chips is longer than average products as glass-encapsulated LED has higher tolerance to temperature. Product as such will naturally become popular for clients of industrial, factory, curing and printing businesses applications.

It’s projected that the order for this product will be relatively huge.
Though not an exhibitor, Nichia’s LED chip was used as promotion emphasis by local LED manufacturers.
Taiwanese leading manufacturer Everlight has the largest booth among Taiwanese exhibitors in LED Expo Thailand 2016. The company demonstrated products include LED streetlights, horticultural lighting, LED display, UV LED and automotive LED and other products.
Everlight has established strong cooperative relationship with southeast-based manufacturers for manufacturing of LED displays, LED products used in transportation and horticultural lighting, in which south-eastern agriculture industry has strong interest. Everlight’s development has great potential in this area. Other Taiwanese manufacturers participating in the LED Expo Thailand 2016 include Ledlink Optics, Mean Well, Lextar (shared one stand with Mean Well), Bright Energy, Rainbow Light, Taiwan Matsuo, Billion Electric, Win Chance, TCP and Super Trend Lighting.
Many Chinese manufacturers returned to the exhibition this year. A spacious area was used by Chinese exhibitors and was divided into subcategories include Shenzhen exhibitors and others. Leading Chinese exhibitors include Opple, Honglitronic, and Vertex.
